The McGill Bellairs Research Institute PhD Assistantship aims to encourage and support graduate research at the Bellairs Research Institute by recruiting a Program Assistant for the Barbados Field Study Semester. Incoming as well as enrolled students are eligible. This year, the award is valued at CAD 15,000.
This competitive assistantship will be awarded to a student who meets the following criteria:
1. Is or will be a full-time PhD student at McGill University in the Faculty of Science during the coming academic year
(2023-2024);
2. Demonstrates a strong interest in field-based research;
3. Proposes a research project addressing one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
applied to the Caribbean.
The Program Assistant will stay at the Bellairs Research Institute for the entire Fall semester, from Aug. 28th, 2023 until December 8th, 2023. In addition to lodging, two meals per day are provided on weekdays.
The ideal candidate will have experience in implementing academic activities in the field, have excellent logistic and organizational skills, be able to manage emergencies, possess a valid driver’s license, be flexible and able to adapt, and provide support to students enrolled in the Barbados Field Study Semester.
The Program Assistant will provide support in all non-academic components of the BFSS program, including risk management to ensure student safety, group dynamics, community engagement, and daily program operations. The Program Assistant will work closely with the Academic Director, course instructors, and the Operation Manager of the Bellairs Research Institute to guarantee a smooth delivery of academic content in the Barbados Field Study Semester, by:
- Providing support for the planning and implementation of research projects of students enrolled in the BFSS;
- Providing support for contacting partners in Barbados, and facilitating liaison between the local community and students enrolled in the BFSS;
- Assisting students enrolled in the BFSS in developing a research proposal, planning, and conducting their field work;
- Ensuring that all required equipment and material is available for students throughout the duration of the program.
The Program Assistant is expected to provide regular feedback and updates to the Academic Director and work closely with instructors in the program and the manager of the Bellairs Research Institute, take measures to ensure a safe working environment for students at the Bellairs Research Institute, or during field trips and field work, and report in timely manner to the Academic Director and Operation Manager of any issue arising.
